Introduction
Apple TV is one of the most capable streaming devices available, combining powerful hardware with the polished tvOS experience. With Smarter Stream TV, your Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD becomes a premium IPTV powerhouse, giving you access to over 45,000 live channels, 220,000+ VOD titles, and full EPG support β all rendered in stunning HD, 4K, and HDR on your television.
Setting up IPTV on Apple TV is straightforward thanks to several excellent IPTV apps available on the Apple App Store. Unlike Firestick, there is no sideloading required β everything installs directly through the official App Store. The most popular options are GSE Smart IPTV and Flex IPTV, both of which fully support our Xtream Codes API and M3U playlist format.
This guide covers setup using GSE Smart IPTV, which we recommend for its clean tvOS interface, robust EPG support, and frequent updates. The same credentials work with Flex IPTV if you prefer that appβs interface.
System Requirements
Before setting up, confirm your hardware and network meet these requirements:
- Device: Apple TV HD (4th generation or later) or Apple TV 4K (any generation)
- Operating System: tvOS 14 or later; tvOS 16+ recommended
- Storage: 500 MB free space for app installation and cache
- Internet Speed: 10 Mbps for SD/HD, 25 Mbps for Full HD, 50 Mbps for 4K HDR
- Connection: Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) minimum; Ethernet strongly recommended for 4K (requires adapter on Apple TV 4K 3rd gen)
- Apple ID: Required to download apps from the App Store
- Account: Active Smarter Stream TV subscription with Xtream Codes API credentials or M3U URL
Installation Steps

-
Search for GSE Smart IPTV β Inside the App Store, select the Search tab (magnifying glass icon). Use the on-screen keyboard or speak βGSE Smart IPTVβ using Siri (press and hold the microphone button). Select the app from the search results.
-
Download and Install β Tap Get (free version) or the download cloud icon if you previously purchased it. tvOS will prompt for your Apple ID password or Touch ID/Face ID if your iPhone is configured for App Store authentication. The app will download and install automatically.
-
Launch GSE Smart IPTV β Press the Menu button or swipe right on the touchpad to go back to the home screen. Find GSE Smart IPTV in your apps and press the touchpad to open it.

Choose Xtream Codes Login for the best experience, then enter your Server URL, Username, and Password from your Smarter Stream TV welcome email. Give it a friendly name like βSmarter Stream TVβ and confirm.
-
Alternatively, Use an M3U URL β If you prefer M3U, select M3U URL instead of Xtream Codes. Paste your M3U playlist URL from your welcome email. The URL typically looks like
http://yourserver.com:8080/get.php?username=X&password=Y&type=m3u_plus. -
Wait for Channel Import β After saving your credentials, GSE Smart IPTV will connect to our servers and download your full channel list, VOD library, and EPG data. On a good connection this takes 1β3 minutes. A progress indicator is shown on screen.
-
Browse Live TV β Once loaded, navigate to Live TV using the Siri Remote. Youβll see your channel groups on the left and channels in the main panel. Use the touchpad to swipe between groups and press to select a channel. Playback begins within 2β4 seconds.
-
Set Up EPG Program Guide β Press the Up swipe on the touchpad while watching live TV to open the EPG grid. You can browse current and upcoming programs across all channels. If EPG is not showing, go to Settings > EPG in the app and trigger a manual refresh.
-
Add Favourite Channels β Press and hold the Select button while a channel is highlighted to see options including Add to Favourites. Your favourites appear at the top of the channel list for quick access. You can also create custom playlists within the app to organise channels by genre or language.
Troubleshooting
App crashes immediately after launch: Force-quit GSE Smart IPTV by double-pressing the TV/Home button and swiping up on the app preview. Restart your Apple TV by going to Settings > System > Restart. If the crash persists, delete and reinstall the app. Ensure tvOS is updated to the latest version.
Siri Remote navigation feels unresponsive in the app: GSE Smart IPTV is optimised for the Siri Remoteβs touchpad. If navigation feels sluggish, go to Settings > Remotes and Devices > Touch Surface Tracking on your Apple TV and adjust the tracking speed. The Apple TV 4K 3rd gen Siri Remote has improved touchpad response compared to earlier generations.
Channels load slowly or timeout: Check your DNS settings. Go to Apple TV Settings > Network > Wi-Fi > Configure DNS and change it to Manual, then enter 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1. This often dramatically improves channel loading speed. Also ensure no other devices on your network are consuming large amounts of bandwidth.
4K streams not playing in 4K: Ensure your Apple TV is connected to a 4K TV via HDMI 2.0 or later cable. Go to Settings > Video and Audio > Resolution and confirm it is set to 4K (not 1080p). Also verify that your Smarter Stream TV subscription includes 4K streams β our Premium plan includes 4K and HDR content.
EPG shows wrong times or missing data: Apple TVβs timezone must be correctly configured. Go to Settings > General > Language and Region > Timezone and ensure it matches your local time. GSE Smart IPTV uses the system timezone to display EPG times.
Device FAQ
Smarter Stream TV works on Apple TV HD (4th generation and later) and Apple TV 4K (all generations: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gen). We recommend Apple TV 4K for the best streaming experience, particularly for 4K HDR content. Older Apple TV models (1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation) run tvOS versions that are no longer updated and do not support modern IPTV apps from the App Store.
GSE Smart IPTV offers a free version with basic functionality and a Pro upgrade available as an in-app purchase (approximately Β£4.99 one-time). The free version supports M3U playlists and basic live TV viewing. The Pro version adds features like EPG support, recording, multi-screen layouts, and an ad-free experience. For daily use with Smarter Stream TV, we recommend the Pro version for the best EPG integration.
Yes, if you have Smarter Stream TV running on your iPhone or iPad, you can AirPlay the stream to your Apple TV at the tap of a button. While watching a stream in your IPTV app, tap the AirPlay icon and select your Apple TV. The video will switch to the TV screen. However, for the best quality and lowest latency, we recommend installing the IPTV app directly on Apple TV rather than AirPlay mirroring, which introduces additional processing overhead.
Apple TV buffers for the same reasons as other devices β insufficient bandwidth or a weak Wi-Fi signal β but it can also be affected by tvOS background processes using bandwidth. Try closing other apps on Apple TV by double-pressing the TV button and swiping up to close them. Also check your router's Quality of Service (QoS) settings and prioritise Apple TV's IP address if your router supports it. A 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection or wired Ethernet (Apple TV HD and 4K 1st/2nd gen have Ethernet; 4K 3rd gen requires a USB-C Ethernet adapter) will dramatically improve stability.
Your Smarter Stream TV subscription credentials (Xtream Codes server, username, password) can be entered in the IPTV app on any device you own. You can freely switch between your Apple TV and iPhone using the same credentials.
